On 1 December 2023, at the 28th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the Biosphere 3 Solutions Pavilion hosted the “Global Net Zero Climate Dialogue – Hong Kong Session.”
Moderated by Patrick Tsang, Chairman of Tsangs Group and Co-founder of the Hong Kong Ambassadors Club (“HKAC”), Wang Shi, Founder of Vanke Group and DeepRock Group; The Hon Jeffrey Lam, GBM, GBS, JP, Member of Legislative Council and Executive Council of Hong Kong SAR Government and Co-founder of the HKAC discussed collaborative approaches to addressing climate change challenges. Distinguished guests also included Tse Chin-wan, BBS, JP, the Secretary for Environment and Ecology; and Salina Yan Mei Mei, JP, the Permanent Secretary for Financial Services & the Treasury (Financial Services).
The Global Net Zero Climate Dialogue is a daily series of discussions at the Biosphere 3 Pavilion during COP28, inviting domestic and international experts, and political and business leaders in net zero and sustainable development to engage in in-depth, one-on-one exchanges on climate change-related topics.
Wang Shi addressed this year’s COP28 theme: “Unite. Act. Deliver.” In the current dynamic global situation, he emphasised that unity is urgent. Although the political landscape of the world is changing for various reasons, the need for unified action against climate change remains a top priority.
With the development of the Greater Bay Area, Wang Shi looks forward to the integration and joint development of cities on both sides of the bay in economic, social, and cultural aspects. Also mentioning the Sunnylands Statement on enhancing cooperation to address the climate crisis, issued on the eve of the opening of COP28 by the world’s two largest economies and carbon emitters (China and the US, which together account for nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions), to strengthen cooperation and address the climate crisis.
He expressed gratitude for the participation of the HKAC in COP28, who is currently leading the “BridgeME HKAC UAE-HK-GBA COP28 NextGen Delegation”, consisting of members of family offices, technology family businesses from Mainland China and Hong Kong, with a mission to represent Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area’s role in green finance, sustainability, and technology.
The Hon Jeffrey Lam, GBM, GBS, JP stated that the Club is a non-profit organisation serving global investors, business elites, and leaders from various sectors. He hopes that through Hong Kong, the Club will continue to play its role as an international metropolis in Asia, promoting relationships and in-depth exchanges with global leaders in business, finance, culture, and the arts and showcasing Hong Kong’s unique culture and spirit.
Hong Kong has long promoted clean energy and a clean economy, encouraging green business transformation. The Hon Jeffrey Lam, GBM, GBS, JP believes change is always good, but it requires thoughtful consideration of how to transition. Hong Kong and Shenzhen, as sibling cities, should cooperate closely, involving governments, social organisations, and enterprises.
“We are proud of having kicked off the 2nd day of COP28 here in Dubai with a lively discussion about how the Green Silk Road can take shape by linking ideas born in China and in the COP28 host country UAE. We agreed that there is no Plan B, because there is no Planet B,”commented Patrick Tsang.
